My life-changing, butt-kicking, face-slapping moment came to me when I was 27 years old, living in Perth, Western Australia. At that time I was working in a Corporate Health role for mining companies, building a small pilates business, working long days, and traveling regularly to remote parts of Australia. When I wasn’t working, my life was consumed with parties, friends, drinking, music festivals, eating out….and sleep was no where near the top of my priority list.
It was about this time that a scan revealed, to my horror, a large dermoid cyst growing on my left ovary. I remember so clearly sitting in the doctors surgery, listening to this insensitive old male surgeon telling me that he will “probably” have to remove the whole ovary, due to the difficulty of the procedure. As you can imagine I walked out of that doctors surgery in tears, as a single 27 year old woman with a new fear surrounding my dreams of having children one day….
A bit of history for you…..this was not the first time I’ve had abdominal surgery. I had my appendix burst & removed at the age of 15, and then one year later I received major abdominal surgery after a serious car accident I was a passenger in. As you can imagine this surgery caused a LOT of trauma to my body, as well as saving my life, and I’m forever reminded of it every time I take my clothes off and see the big 20cm scar down the middle of my belly (which took a long time for me to become comfortable with).
The thought of going under a surgeons knife again, and having my old scar re-opened really freaked me out. My whole being screamed NOOOOOO!!!!!! I was NOT prepared to let another surgeon anywhere near my stomach with a knife, and I did not want any more trauma to my bowel.
This was a turning point in my life, and I frantically started researching alternative ways to heal my body of this Dermoid cyst and to explore the reasons why the cyst was there in the first place….something the doctor never once mentioned. Through my research I discovered that the even after surgery, many woman will experience the cysts returning, often to the other ovary.
The first resource that helped me a lot was this one by Mary Parker, called ‘Ovarian Cysts No More’, where I first began discovering the path of holistic & natural healing. I realised through my research that the type of cyst that I had, a dermoid cyst, was going to be a lot more difficult to get rid of naturally, but that did not put me off as I was determined to give anything a go.
So started my journey of cleansing, detoxing, yoga, meditation and clean organic foods & living, which has led me where I am today. I cleaned my diet from alcohol, caffeine, additives, preservatives, artificial colours, flavours, meat, dairy, processed & packaged food, and introduced an organic plant based diet & nutritional supplements. I started seeing a naturopath, started yoga, meditation, and chose to surround myself with people who would support me on this journey. I even traveled to Bali for 10 days by myself to immerse myself in a detox yoga retreat, which was the most amazing experience and it was here that I got the signs that I was on the right path at last 🙂
It was a really difficult time for me, especially because most of the people I surrounded myself with were used to the ‘old party Ngaire’, and I was constantly faced with the challenge of staying strong and true to myself, and to not be swept up back into my old ways. It led to feelings of isolation and frustration as I had to distance myself from some of my old social networks.
2009, and another big face-slap from the Universe, led me to escape the city, and head to a gorgeous part of the world, Margaret River, in the south west of Australia. I needed to heal, and to do that I needed nature & a place that would fill up my soul. This is where I continued my journey & experimentation with wholefood nutrition, cleansing & detoxing, and started to lead others on the same path I was on. I was involved in community workshops, wholefood cleansing programs both locally & online, and I also worked closely with an amazing chef in developing the ‘ Wholefood Kitchen Class’ series at the amazing organic raw food/yoga/surfing centre in Dunsborough called Samudra.
My dream is to work with other young woman to help find balance in their life, to ensure they have all of their primary foods taken care of in combination with a clean wholefoods diet, and to have fun along the way! I am so grateful I got that cyst, as it has put me on the path that I needed to be on. After my experiences, I have a strong desire to reach out and help other woman going through similar experiences as me. I don’t believe anyone is perfect, I certainly am not. I believe everyone is on their own journey, and I know deep in my heart that it is my job to support, motivate, encourage and love you on yours.
