Chocolate Iron-Booster Smoothie

The 3pm sleepy brain has hit you…

Usually a cat-nap or a walk outside in the fresh air is the best remedy, but when you cannot leave the office, this is a fantastic afternoon pick-me-up!!  If you battle with keeping your iron levels up (like me!), then chances are feeling tired may be a normal part of your day.

This smoothie was created with iron-boosting in mind….it is my all-time favourite pick-me-up and iron-booster chocolate smoothie recipe!!  This little baby will be a part of this year’s cleanse menu, and so I thought I would share it here today as a little taster of whats to come in the program!

This recipe includes a few ingredients that are very rich in minerals (including iron of course!), vitamins, fatty acids and other health benefits.  Scroll to the bottom of the post if you want to read more about these ingredients!  Otherwise, please enjoy the smoothie!!

 

CHOCOLATE CINNAMON IRON-BOOSTER SMOOTHIE2013-09-07 16.29.08

  • 250ml rice, oat or almond milk (alternatively a good quality organic full-cream dairy milk if you prefer)
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 large tablespoon unhulled tahini
  • 1 heaped teaspoon raw cacao powder or cacao nibs or beans (for chocolate crunch!)
  • 1 heaped teaspoon macca powder
  • sprinkle cinnamon (in the mix or on top)

Blend and enjoy!

I hope you enjoy this quick little chocolate smoothie…it’s especially great as the weather is starting to warm up.  Oh and the kids should dig this one too 🙂

The Low-down on the Ingredients…

Tahini:  Tahini is basically just ground up sesame seeds, and sesame seeds are an extremely rich source of iron.  It is important to purchase the ‘unhulled’ tahini, as all of the nutrients (including the iron!) are in the hull of the seed.  If you are using raw sesame seeds, ensure you soak them first to remove the phytic acid (which inhibits iron uptake).

Maca:  Maca is considered a superfood and comes from a root plant that has been cultivated in the Peruvian Andes of South America for approximately 2,600 years! (David Wolfe 2009, Superfoods)  Maca is actually a member of the cruciferous family (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower etc) and is rich in minerals (including calcium, iron & zinc!), amino acids (20 in total, including 7 essential) and vitamins B1, B2, C, and E.  Maca is known to improve the following conditions:

  • Anaemia
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Infertility
  • Lack of Libido (yes it has aphrodisiac qualities!)
  • Menstrual discomfort & disorders
  • Poor memory
  • Stress tension

Cacao:  And then of course, we have the famous raw Cacao (chocolate!), which has tonnes of health benefits just like Maca.  It is rich in minerals & trace minerals (including iron, chromium, manganese, zinc, copper) as well as vitamin C and omega-6 fatty acids.

Cinnamon:  Cinnamon is great for helping to control blood sugar levels (ie those mid-afternoon sugar cravings!), it is also known to have anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties.  Sprinkled into smoothies or over your morning oats is a great way to add cinnamon into your diet.  Maybe stay away from the cinnamon scrolls…not such a nutritious idea!!
