How My Fear Of Infertility Gave Me Clarity

November 3rd, 2014 | 20 comments

Someone asked me once… ”What is it that drives you?  What keeps you motivated to stay healthy?”

I thought this was a great question, so I wrote a blog post describing the processes I use to keep myself motivated.  But the question kept popping up back in my head, and I soon realised it was because I had not been 100% honest and real…

Since I was a young woman, I have always had a strong desire to have children.  I just knew it was something I really wanted to experience, and couldn’t wait to be at that stage of my life!

Then six years ago, when I was 27, I was given some news that shook me to the core of my womb and immediately wrapped me in a thick blanket of fear.  I discovered I had a dermoid cyst on my ovary, and I was told that my whole ovary would have to be removed.

I felt scared & alone.

I was approaching my 30’s and still very much single, but I knew then, that if I was to have a healthy child in my 30’s I needed to take good care of myself NOW.

Instead of playing victim and wallowing in self-pity, I decided to look at my cyst as a sign that I needed to change something in my life.  It was a gift that gave me the courage & strength to get myself back on track.

Who knew when I would meet the right man?  This was not in my power, but the health of my body was…and so this is what became the center of my focus and drive;

A healthy body for a healthy conception in my 30’s.

Having previously had serious abdominal surgery after a car accident, which left a big 20cm scar down my belly, and emergency appendix surgery (mine burst!), and then the ovarian cyst, it finally dawned on me…

I realised that the deepest driving factor behind my own personal healing journey, and now my work, has always been…

And not just for me, but for the health of mother earth.  Discovering the high-rates of infertility, seeing young children being fed processed chemical-laden foods, and watching young woman dis-respecting their bodies (used to be me!) all make my heart bleed.

But I was never brave enough to share my infertility fears with anyone.  I thought people might think I’m silly, especially because I didn’t even have a boyfriend at the time, and the thought of pregnancy and children were such a long way off…if ever?

With the support of some of my incredible soul sisters at a recent business retreat, I unveiled the core essence of my business and with that, a much clearer direction.

The focus of my work will be around:

Pregnancy Preparation, Body Empowerment & Belly Love

We will dive into:

  • physical elements (core strength, back pain, movement nutrition, gut health, ovarian cysts, scars, digestive problems)
  • emotional elements (pain, fear, confusion, empowerment, body image)
  • metaphysical elements (base chakras, womb wisdom, womb healing, feminine essence, intuition).

All of the topics that make my heart sing, and make for healthy, happy & fertile woman….which means a healthier next generation and a healthier planet.

Woman making heart shape

Whats Next?

I am in the beginning stages of developing a program called ‘BARE YOUR BELLY’ which will be specifically designed for woman who want to bring love and nourishment to their belly, pelvis, core, womb and the power center of the body.

There will be a lot of ‘pregnancy preparation’ focus, but this doesn’t have to be in the immediate future for you…heck you might not even have a man yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start this work now!  It will just mean you will be ready for when it does happen.  And who knows, maybe doing this work on yourself might actually bring you closer to finding ‘the one’?!!

You may have also seen on facebook that the ’21-Day Wholefood Cleanse’ is no longer going to be run live, although the program will still available as a download from my site.  With this new clarity and direction, I need to create space in my life to immerse in the processes, to research, get creative, get curious, play and write.

I want to hear from you!

I’m 35 and my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for almost a year. I thought it would all be so easy at first! When I finally had some tests I found out that through a combination of bad luck, and not taking very good care of my body, I have some work to do before I’m at an optimal level of health to conceive and carry a baby!

This is a lovely new direction you’re taking and one that I’m sure will be close to many people’s heart. I’ll be looking forward to updates!

Good on you Ngaire, a topic that too few women would ever admit to feeling. It’s very courageous of you to get it out in the open. I can’t wait to see where your research leads too. Well done x Cat

    • ngaire stephenson says:

Thank you Cat!! It is a little scary, but you are right, it seems that pregnancy preparation is only ever talked about when you actually start trying…and if you are in your 30’s you really need to start earlier!!

Thanks Belinda!! Well you can’t go wrong either way right! A healthy body = a happier life, and prolongs your bodies ability to conceive if you happen to meet the right man later in life 🙂 xxx

I cant carry a child, but I feel this topic that you have targeted if on the forefront of soo many minds of woman in this age group. Although i am healthy now and i have accepted my situation i think it is fabulous that you are following this path.. As we arnt getting any younger but we can certainly get healthier!!

    Hey Ngaire ,
What a great gift you have . Your insight will help so many people struggling with this issue and you have hit the nail on the head . As always you are able to look deep within and soul search .. thank you for your inspiration and some wonderful advice exercise and thoughts you gave to me in Margaret River 🙂

  8. Lana says:

Congratulations Ngaire, on a beautifully written and very authentic blog. People want to know the real you, and the connection you offer is just awesome, especially for those travelling down the path of possible conception. I very much believe in your new direction. From someone who has had gut issues, I now see some of that replicated in my two children and what you are offering could prevent that happening.
I love what you said “A healthy body for a healthy conception in my 30’s”
Go for it!!! Much Love xo

    Hey Niza!

Talk about a cosmic coincidence! Increasingly over the past year and very much so these past weeks I have been travelling on my own version of the very same journey. It is as if the universe has tuned in to my heart and mind and in has sent YOU (my dear, inspiring, beautiful woman friend!) to guide me along this road. In turn it has brought ME to be there right alongside you on your journey. I cannot wait to ‘Bare my belly’ with you Ngaire.

Lots and lots of love from the West Coast and from Me!
    Nel xxxx

Hi Nicole!! Oh so great to connect hun!! Sounds like we are living parallel lives 🙂 My site doesn’t have a lot of fertility stuff on it yet as I’ve only just started exploring this area…have a lot of plans for it though! Are you on instagram? I’ve started a new page A_Fertile_Life to start exploring and providing fertility info…as well as sharing my own journey 🙂 Lets keep in touch for sure!! Would love to hear your thoughts on fertility preparation…such a big area but there doesn’t seem to be too much info/support out there, except for take a preganancy multi-vitamin, get fit and stop drinking alcohol! When is your wedding?!
