Top 10 Ways To Spring Clean Your Body

It’s Spring time here in Australia…yipeee!

Time to throw off the layers, run on the beach, air the house out, smell the flowers, and feel the sunshine on your skin 🙂

It’s also the time of year when I most feel like I need a good spring clean of my body…after the heaviness of all the winter foods.

Here are my top 10 tips to spring clean your body this spring….hopefully this will give you a good start!

(And if you keep reading all the way to the bottom, I have included a delicious home-made body scrub recipe :)) 

 

1 – Drink More Water

I know this one is glaringly obvious, but seriously, sooooo many of my clients STILL do not drink enough water!!  It is even more important as we come into the warmer months here in Australia & New Zealand, as your body will be sweating more!!  If you want to read more about the importance of water on our health, read this book: ‘The Body’s Many Cries For Water’: You’re not sick, your thirsty!

 

2 – Eat Foods That Are Easy To Digest

If you are trying to give your system a clean out, the most important thing is to eat foods that don’t take a lot of energy to digest…foods that are easy for the body to break down, such as fruits and non-starchy vegetables (celery, carrots, leafy greens, capsicum, cucumber etc).  Avoid heavy starchy foods, too much meat, and salty foods.

 

3 – Exfoliate Your Skin

Your skin plays a massive role in detoxification of the human body, as we release toxins out through the skins pores.  Gentle exfoliation is such a good way to assist this process.  You can find beautiful natural exfoliation products for your face and body, or you can make up your own at home…keep scrolling as I’ve included a recipe below!  Dry body brushing is also a great way to exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells.  Try to find one that is made of natural fibers, rather than plastic.

 

4 – Avoid Loading Up Your Skin With Product

We already know from the tip above, that your skin plays an important role when it comes to detoxification.  So do you really think it is a good idea to clog it up again with make-up and chemical-laden moisturisers and creams??!  Sometimes make-up can cause the skin to break out, so it becomes a vicious cycle…we use the make-up to cover ‘bad skin’, but by allowing the skin to breath (and eating a good diet), your skin will improve!  During a detox or cleanse, your skin will often get worse before it will get better…just persevere!!

 

5 – Spring Clean Your Pantry & Fridge

This is something I HIGHLY recommend doing on a regular basis (not just spring!).  Pull everything out and give the insides of your fridge and pantry a good clean.  Then when you put everything back in, be sure to reorganise it so that the healthy foods are the ones that are at eye-level and easiest to reach.  The ‘sometimes’ foods should be put out of sight, so that when you go hunting for food in those hungry moments, you won’t reach for those foods.

 

6 – Get The Sun On Your Face In The Morning

When you wake up in the morning, open the curtains and windows, step outside, and allow the sunlight to naturally increase your body’s serotonin levels…the hormone that will naturally wake you up, so you don’t need to rely on coffee to “wake you up”.  You also want to make sure you get some sun on your skin most days to keep your vitamin D levels up!  (Read more about vitamin D here)

 

7 – Avoid the Liver Loaders

I’m sure you know exactly what I’m talking about here…..avoid an excess of alcohol, caffeine, red meat, salt, processed/packaged food, refined sugars.  Everything in moderation lovelies, and maybe give your body a break from all of these things for a few weeks to allow your body to properly detox.

 

8 – Friend & Environment Gardening

Detoxing isn’t necessarily just about food….it can also be about letting go of other ‘toxic’ things in your life.  Get out a piece of paper and jot down 5 people/environments that are most supportive of you…people who believe in you and your dreams.  Then write down a list of people/environments that are NOT supportive of you, people who bring you down or don’t believe in you.  It might be time to do a little gardening…pull out some weeds, and plant some new seeds?!

 

9 – Move Your Body

Notice I don’t use the word ‘exercise’?  I believe many people have negative connotations with this word…kind of like the word homework!!  Instead I want you to move your body in a way that is pleasurable and fun to YOU!  Write a list of all the activities you have done in your life that you really really enjoyed, even as a kid!  How can you fit these things into your life?  I’ve just started hula hooping, and I freaking love it!  I get to dance, listen to good music, shake my booty, move my joints, and get a good workout (especially core!) at the same time.  What can YOU do to move more??

 

10 – Breathe Deeply

Spend a few minutes every day working on your breathing….relax your body and focus on breathing oxygen deep into your lungs, allowing your rib cage to expand three dimensionally, and your belly to rise.  When you exhale make sure you breath all of the air out of your lungs.  Deep breathing helps to oxygenate the blood, and assists in detoxifying the body systems.

Natural Home-Made Body Scrub Recipe

If you want to save some money, then this is a great little recipe you can whip up easily at home.  This recipe came from one of my Cleanse guest speakers, Angela Jackson from Tea Pot Health Coaching.  Thanks Ange!!

  • 1/4 cup oatmeal
  • 1/4 cup quality salt
  • 2/3 cup of oils of choice  (I like using extra virgin olive oil, coconut & jojoba oil.  You could also use flaxseed oil, avocado oil or almond oil too!)
  • 8 drops of essential oil of choice (lavender is my fave)
Instructions:
  1. Ground the oatmeal in a blender (or mortar & pestle)
  2. Mix with the other ingredients
  3. Store in an air-tight container, and preferably away from sunlight.
  4. Give your body a good scrub in the shower with the mixture
  5. Give your body a gentle towel off, and enjoy your soft smooth skin!

PS:  Use mixture within 2 weeks as there are no preservatives.
